The finish line

Day 30- Yah!!! I’m here Day 30! It has been a great productive journey that I’m so happy I was a part of. It’s introduced a new thought process and pace for my art making that I will be continuing.

I’d like to share with you my assistants in my studio through this process.

Picanesse; The god of art and business from Nepal. I say a prayer to Picanesse(sp?) daily to bless my studio.

The elephant is placed in my studio to bring good luck as elephants are considered lucky in some countries.

These beads were a gift to me from a Nun in a Buddhist temple in Thailand who is very dear to me. Her name is Nin. I spent five days at the Temple in Phuket with Nin and monks. I only spoke a little Thai and she only spoke a little English but somehow we understand each other.

This is cockco the cat. He is 18 years old and isn’t much of a support system as he sleeps most of the time but nonetheless its always nice to have a cat around when you are painting.

Of course I have to have the ipod. One of the greatest accessories for painters.

Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement during my time here.

I added a slide on my blog of all the paintings I did over the last 30 days.

So close to being a soldier

Day 29- It’s a great feeling being in your studio surrounded by all the paintings done in the last month…..well just about one month…one day left to go till I’m a 30 day artist soldier.

Really as artists that is what we are, soldiers fighting our battles on canvases.

Some we win…some we loose but we always give it everything we have.

My perverse art dream

Day 28- I am having sunshine withdrawals! Sun come back please.

In the last month maybe the Sun has made an appearance on two days for brief moments. It’s not a pretty sight. Grey. Foggy. Gross. Yuck!

I’m just not into this whole winter thing. I don’t even want to go outside.

But I guess I can’t complain too much as I was able to miss two months of the winter and spend it in Thailand.

However, surprisingly enough if you didn’t know Thailand gets a winter too, they call it rainy season and does it RAIN. It’s really strange to me as it’s hot but its pouring. In the North of Thailand they had a lot of flooding from the rain.

One village where a crocodile farm was located experienced heavy flooding …and well you had crocodiles floating down the streets. Glad I was in South Thailand!

Anyways enough about that…how did I start babbling about crocodiles?

So back to what we are here to talk about, let’s talk about ART.

There is just something wonderful about working on a large canvas. It’s so loose and free. I can’t wait for the day that I have my huge dream studio where I can splash paint around all over huge canvases, the walls, me and anything or anybody in the area.

That’s my perverse art dream.

I spent most of the day prepping the canvas to give it a rough and textured feel once I begin to paint on it.

I’m not even at the half way mark yet. You are the lucky few who get to see this beginning stage.

day28.jpg

I paint intuitively and with emotion when I work on an abstract painting like this one.

It’s much of a push pull process.Often the finished painting can be drastically different than the beginning painting.

This is a close up view of todays work. It makes a nice compostion just like this too.

Sometimes it’s the lack of something that works

Day 27- Happy Saturday

The painting I worked on today was originally from a study I did about Fauvism years ago. The study was successful in capturing what Fauvism is about but the colors were just so wrong to me and I never grew to love this painting. Instead it was kept in a portfolio until today. I had another look at the painting. I always liked the composition of this piece and that it could tell many stories. So back up on the easel it went.

I toned down the palette dramatically and did some other small adjustments. The colors I feel match the entire mood of the painting now. It finally works!

day27.jpg

I didn’t think of it until after but I should of took a before shot. It’s amazing what color can do or the lack of color!

It will have to be about b.a.l.a.n.c.e.

Day 26- I’ve decided as 30 day artist has been a profoundly good influence on my art that next month I will continue with painting one painting a day.

If you want to keep following my progress in my studio and listen to my babble you can find me at www.purjcreative.blogspot.com

You can also view my website and see some of my other paintings  www.purjcreative.com

On blogspot I’ll be starting on  February 1st. I think also in the near future I will  have to get a hobby..…I mean a job-job to pay for my art supplies and stuff. Anybody hear about that ‘ save an artist fund’ yet?

There is no way my ‘hobby’ will get in the way of my painting,my real job. I have far too many ideas I want to explore and goals to cross of my list(s).

It will have to be about balance.

I can’t leave my studio alone. It will cry and I will cry and it will be sad.

day26.jpg

See this is me crying. See all the blue tears?  No really! No tears. I meant for this painting to be about someone lost in deep thought but the figure ended up looking sad….could be some sad thoughts?

I like how the blending turned out on this one. As acrylic paint drys really fast…it can be a challange sometimes to get that right look when blending.

What happens with the left over day?

Day 25- Wow day 25! I really felt the pressure today as it’s officially 5 days till the end of the month and the end of my time on 30 day artist. Well its 6 days till the end of the month as this month has 31 days. But I guess it would be called 30 or 31 day artist. So what happens on this left over day?

It’s really amazing to see how many paintings I have created this month. I like playing a game with people it consists of me asking ‘guess how many paintings I did this month?’ their answer usually is under 10, most say under 5. When I tell them the true amount everybody is really surprised. Really I am surprised too! This really sets the pace from now on

.day25.jpg

Today’s piece still needs some work but I like the potential in the way this one is going. I’m looking for one of my paintings to be in an exhibition next month; this painting could work….depending how it turns out.

Day 24- Woke up bright and ambitious today intending to paint all day….but somehow didn’t get into my studio until the afternoon. I blame Bob Barker from the Price Is Right for an hour of that.

You got to love the Price Is Right but damn it’s a distraction. Mental note  *I must kill the TV!*

I started a sister painting today for Day 18 ‘s painting. It still needs some finishing touches and clean ups but so far I’m happy with the look of the piece.

The history of one little painting

Day 23- My way of coping with a real heart aching, breakup from my first love was on a canvas. I used the canvas as a healthy way to move on, sure beats chain smoking.

Each day I painted a layer over a photo  I attachted to a canvas until the photo was so deep under layers.

Honestly, I swear by this. For some reason it works wonders.

The reason I tell this story is because today as I was painting I realized I needed another canvas to continue the idea I was working on. I wanted to use a canvas that would be the same size as the other two I had already started. When I get like this I must be careful to not paint over every canvas I have. I guess I get a case of tunnel vision with whatever I work on.

Anyways, it so happened that this particular layered canvas was the identical size I was looking for. Perfect! So now it has even more paint on it.

I tell you this one canvas has so much paint on it that it is the equivalent of at least 10 canvases! That is a lot of history for one little painting.

Paint with Emotion

Day 22- I felt a little grumpy today; Part weather/Part dealing with a long distance relationship.

How is this expression of paint………

day22.jpg
for a subtle grumpy painting?

I think it’s more on the positive side with the light breaking through the darkness. I just bought some new canvas, I like the texture of this canvas.

Some art instructors talk a lot of crap. Some are brilliant. I remember this statement from a past art instructor

“Paint when you feel something-Paint with emotion”

My studio’s progression

Day 21- Part of being human is not taking our selves too seriously. If we all walked around everyday taking ourselves too seriously we would all end up slashing our wrists with the house cat. Well not that drastic, but we would be a sad group of individuals.

If I took myself too seriously as an artist it wouldn’t be possible for me to be unafraid to create. I need to let ideas and inspiration flow. It’s near impossible to do this with a ridged outlook on life.

Well what I’m saying is it’s a good think I don’t take myself too seriously as I would have never created today’s piece. (Insert laugh here)

day21.jpg

The painting is the third in a series of free flowing ideas that kinda just presented themselves to me over the last three days.

day21a.jpg

I’m having fun with these paintings. Looking at today’s in particular gives me some amusing ideas.

One idea is: ‘Look what you have done! You upset the snowman cleaners!’ For some reason they appear to me to look like cleaners? Is it a sign I need to do some cleaning?

By the way here is the updated version of…..

My studio’s progression

studiobefore1.jpgstudioafter1.jpgstudio14.jpgstudio21.jpg

Starting with 2 days before 30 day artist, 7 days into, 14 days into and 21 days into 30 day artist.
