Day 15: Obsession

Obsession with ships. These are the 4 sides of this 4x4" canvas. Like opposing forces fighting for dominance.

Has any great art ever been made without obsession?

I started my run as 30day artist half-heartedly. My goals were to finish my big commissioned piece, while staying true to the structure of 30day artist, which is to make 40 pieces of work in 30 days.

Then I got sick.

I went through the motions daily. I'm feeling the effects of a long distance relationship. I'm jaded about art and art galleries.

I drag my feet to the studio.

Daily.

Eventually I start on the big piece. Every step is tentative, and almost fearful. Each painting is finished with a sense of relief rather than accomplishment.

And I painted a lot of ships.

Today I feel a change coming on.

persistence has grown to obsession. I have developed an obsession for ships. (thanks in part to reading moby dick, playing Pirates of the Caribbean on PSP, and listening to the sound track)

My thinking and daydreams of ships, turn to meditation on its metaphor. And I am on an intriguing journey in search for meaning. What does Law mean at sea? What hidden mysteries are in a sail. I become attuned and gobble up all information about ships and the sea.

My surroundings become the sea. I become the ship.

My New Obsession has rekindled my passion. At sea, we are dead to the world. This makes us alive.

Day 16: making up the numbers

It turns out that painting on this small format has been a good idea. (4x4"). It allows me to paint at home. I haven't been to the studio for days.

I have some guest over, and it's a working weekend. For those of you who don't know, I'm a car salesman, and tomorrow I'll be spending a good part of the day promoting a new model(car) in a mall.

Just making up the numbers at this stage.

Day 20: Cloud

I hadn't been in the studio for almost a week. It was good to be there... I did this cloud study, as well as worked on the sky of the big painting... My sister said it doesn't look like clouds. Well there's a good lesson in making this painting either way. I am not dissatisfied with my painting that doesn't look like clouds.

I must be getting old. There was a time when I actually believed, I could paint and achieve any effect or degree of qulity in a painting. Nowadys i come face to face with my limits alot. The good thing about that is, I get to push my limits ever so slightly...
