Day 15: Cartoon shading

Today I went to buy some coffee and decided to take my camera with me and make some snaps. I chose one to paint over, and was trying to push it towards looking like the sort of shading in Akira. It took ages to get anywhere and I realised it's really a lot of work to flatten and colour adjust all the small details. But I like the image - as it turned out, I feel it's a nice settling point between photo and comic. This location is just outside my university, and I frequent the Family Mart to the extent that it's part of my programmed behaviour. The 'student' with the gun is the fictive aspect of the picture (Busan is strangely safe in real life). For some reason, in my photos there are usually no people, which is worth mentioning because in Korean cities there are masses of people in every direction, generally very happy looking.

This picture rewards viewing at full scale:

Day 16: Badminton

I'm a badminton player, but I have not much grasp on technique the way the Asians do.
There are even badminton students at the university who drill moves like it's karate.
It's good to get out of the studio and play a group sport - I always hurt after it.
This was about 15 minutes with coloured conte a paris on grey paper.

Day 17: Low Energy

Today I'm tired and drowsy. I couldn't get very much done.
Tomorrow I have a meeting for the university which makes me nervous.
The future as decided by others... but hopefully not any problems.
There's a white board marker sketch and a pastel sketch, but I lost
interest in it.

Day 18: Higher Energy

This is painting with Corel Painter, and it's all I had time to do since today we have meetings and an exhibition to attend. Students asked me to say which I thought was the best work, so I voted for the pretty girl's work. They were all good.
Anyway, with this picture I plan to work it up more and spend a lot of time doing the clothing, so it's just an enlarged detail in this post. It took about 3 hours.

Day 19: Pencils

This is a pencil sketch I colour adjusted after photographing. I did it kind of quickly as I aim to get back to painting a bit longer piece where I'm just doing detail by detail and it's not enough to show yet, so hope to get that done by the end of the month. I did a horizontal flip of the pencil sketch and it's really wonky, so I guess I missed the mark. You get used to how a drawing looks, even it it's off.

Day 20: Fun with 3D

A while ago I sat down with someone who didn't know any 3D and tried to explain the very basics of how 3D modeling works. I made these drawings and decided to collect them together here. Sure, there are lots of books like the Art of Maya which introduce 3D concepts, but these were done real-time with a student and it was really fun to put as much as possible onto one sketchpad page.

Day 21: Suffering

Day 21 - Morale is low. Oppressive heat due to no air conditioning compiled with mosquito bite irrations. Lost work makes slow progress. Pencils are all we have to show for a slow day. We look forward to a change of weather and raised spirits. Coffee would be a welcome restorative, or sleep.
